MEMBERS of the public in Newport yesterday afternoon would have witnessed a singing surprise as more than 70 school children took part in a festive flash mob to raise money for the Welsh homeless charity Llamau.

The 72 children from Glan Usk Primary School’s choir walked from the school up to Friars Walk, where they surprised passers by when breaking into song.

After the walk from 1.15pm, the children broke up into small groups and then came together at the bottom of the shopping centre to sing several songs for both the public and their parents who came along to watch.

Music teacher Lucy Lawson organised the choirs first ever flash mob and said: “It was great and makes a real change on Wednesday afternoon but it tired me out.

“It was hard work trying to keep the kids natural whilst they were doing such an usual thing but its these sort of experiences that are worth doing because they will never forget them.”

The group were joined by soloist Tiah Davies for their final songs, which included True Colours by Cyndi Lauper, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Something Inside So Strong by Labi Siffre and I’d Rather Be by Jess Glynne.

Ms Lawson added: “Lots of people donating and thanked us, which was so lovely.”
