A 41-year-old man who died after being found unconscious in a Newport street on Thursday evening has been named as Jan Jedrzejewski.

Mr Jedrzejewski, who Gwent Police say was living in the Newport area, died at the Royal Gwent Hospital yesterday, after being found on the pavement in Keene Street, off Cromwell Road, at around 11pm the previous evening.

Two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old were arrested yesterday and another man, aged 43, has been arrested today in connection in the incident.

All of them have been arrested on suspicion of murder and they are currently in police custody. At this time, the police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

But Gwent Police continues to appeal for information, and are asking for anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.

Officers are particularly interested in speaking to a girl in her late teens or early 20s, who was seen walking into Keene Street at the time of the incident.

She is described as wearing a cream or light coloured long sleeved top or jacket and light blue skinny jeans. She is possibly Afro-Caribbean, and has dark hair which appeared to be tied in a ponytail.

Officers would also like to speak to a boy who was riding his bike along Cromwell Road, on the opposite side of the road to the entrance to Keene Street and the corner shop.

He has been described as wearing a black or dark jacket and blue jeans and wearing a lighter possibly grey coloured backpack.

In addition, a silver four-door hatchback car was seen turning into Keene Street just after the incident at around 10.58pm, and police would like to speak to the driver or any passengers.

“If this is you then please get in touch, as you may hold vital evidence that can help us with our investigation. Please be reassured that you are not in any trouble," said Superintendent Glyn Fernquest.

“I can also confirm that the cordon in the area has now been lifted and I’d like to thank the local community for their patience.

"I’d like to say a particular thanks to the local residents who have supported officers at the scene on what was a very cold January day.

"Your kindness did not go unnoticed by the officers themselves and myself as Superintendent for the area.”
