REVELLERS at a pub in Caerleon were treated to the bizarre sight of a horse’s skull draped in a cloth as part of a Welsh tradition.

The Mari Llwyd, a hobby horse which is covered with a white sheet and coloured ribbons, was used to celebrate Hen Galan – the Welsh New Year – on January 13.

It is carried from house to house by performers who attempt to gain entry for food and drink through song, rhyme and riddles.

After appearing at the White Hart pub, it led a torch-lit procession over the bridge to finish outside the Bell Inn.

Music from the Dai Bach band and others welcomed the performers inside.

It will return on Saturday, January 13, 2018.
