THE decision to reject a travellers’ pitch in Caerleon has been overruled by the Welsh Assembly.

On Wednesday, the Welsh Assembly Planning Inspectorate agreed to overturn a decision made by Newport City Council – which was opposed to the plan – to allow a travellers’ pitch to be situated on the Old Clawdd Piggery in Bulmore Road, Caerleon.

An appeal against the council’s decision was previously launched in September 2016.

The inspectorate has given planning permission for caravans on one travellers’ pitch and the keeping of horses, subject to 16 conditions.

Some of the conditions include, the pitch only being used by Gipsies and travellers and ensuring that there are not more than two caravans at a time on the site.

Michael Enea, a Conservative council candidate for Caerleon, said: “It is very frustrating that the Welsh Assembly Planning Inspectorate have overturned a decision made by Newport City Council.

“I sympathise with those in the local community who have fought hard against this application.”
