RESIDENTS in Pencarn Avenue, Newport, are saying their area has become an "overflow carpark" because employers in the area aren’t providing enough parking.

The residents, who held a meeting with Gwent Police Sgt Hannah Lawton on Tuesday, have described the situation as "a nightmare".

They say employees of Target, in Imperial Way are ignoring double yellow lines and parking on both sides of the road, on the bends and on grass verges.

They say they are also parking on the approach to the roundabout opposite Tredegar House entrance.

Gwent Police say they understand the residents concerns and are seeking to find a solution with financial software company Target.

Amanda Blake, 44, a Pencarn Avenue resident, said: “Trying to go back and forth is a nightmare and it is all day, every day.

“The parking is dreadful and we can’t get deliveries.”

Resident Claire Gates, 43, said is getting worse and that her children aren’t allowed to play outside.

“There is going to be a nasty accident, I worry it will result in something catastrophic,” she said.

Joseph McGrath, another resident, said that Imperial Way is a free for all when it comes to parking.

He said: “We will have to start blocking the road or park in front of their entrances. Our street has become an overflow carpark.”

Gwent Police Sgt Hannah Lawton said there are 200 cars without designated spaces and that they completely understand the residents’ concerns.

She said: “I understand this is a massive issue for them. We have to get the employers on board so they take more responsibility on this.

“We don’t have the resources to ticket everyone every day, a long term solution would have a better outcome. We are in meetings with agencies.”

A spokesman for Target Group said they are aware of the issue and have apologised to residents.

He said: “We are working with all parties to ensure this issue is resolved. We are investigating possible solutions and will continue to remind our employees on ensuring they park responsibly.

"We will encourage them to use the available pay and display car parks whilst we are resolving.”
