A GWENT production has won an award at this year’s Wales Theatre Awards.

Ballet Cymru’s Little Red Riding Hood & The Three Little Pigs, a co-production with Newport’s Riverfront, has won the award for best dance production.

The production was granted permission from The Dahl Foundation to produce two works based on sections of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, Little Red Riding Hood and Three Little Pigs.

A spokeswoman for Ballet Cymru said: “Both works are based on the outstanding and internationally recognised musical scores by composer Paul Patterson.

“With the support of the Dahl Foundation, the production toured throughout the UK.

“At the premiere in Newport, Felicity Dahl, Roald’s wife and Donald Sturrock, Dahl’s biographer were in attendance.”

Eiry Thomas was nominated for best female performance in the English language for her performance in The Glass Menagerie, also a co-production with The Riverfront.

Gillian Mitchell, Head of Theatre, Arts & Culture for Newport Live, said: "The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre is delighted to have the recognition of the Wales Theatre Awards with one of the most coveted awards going to a co-production we actively supported in 2016.

"Little Red Riding Hood & The Three Little Pigs , our co-production with Newport based Ballet Cymru received the award for best dance production.

"As a venue we place a great deal of emphasis on being able to provide meaningful support to some of the best theatre and dance companies in Wales as well as proactively supporting new and emerging artists.

"Partnership working remains increasingly important in a challenging funding environment and we hope to continue our award-winning creative collaborations as well as being able to give audiences in Newport the chance to experience some of the best theatre and dance productions on tour."

The Good Earth, a Motherlode production co-produced with RCT Theatres and in association with Blackwood Miners Institute, was shortlisted for two awards - best director and best ensemble.
