PRIME minister Theresa May will be among speakers at this year’s Welsh Conservative spring conference, which begins today.

The first day of the event at Cardiff’s SWALEC Stadium will also include appearances by Monmouth MP David Davies and his Assembly counterpart Nick Ramsay, as well as South Wales East AM Mohammad Asghar and leader of Monmouthshire Council Peter Fox.

The party’s leader Andrew RT Davies and Welsh secretary Alun Cairns will also speak on Friday, along with his UK Government colleagues Sir Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Fox and Justine Greening.

In a letter to members, Mrs May said: “This May we face important local elections in Wales and right across the UK.

“I know that you will be out pounding the streets and campaigning for all out fantastic council and mayoral candidates, your support will be crucial.

“This weekend you will hear more about how, together, we are going to shape a brighter future for our country - stronger, fairer, more united and more confident as we leave the EU and embrace the world.”

The party’s chairman Jonathan Edwards also wrote to members, saying how delighted he was Mrs May would be attending in what will be her first Welsh Conservative conference as Prime Minister.

“Theresa May has always been a great friend to the Welsh Conservatives, regularly supporting us over many years,” he said.

Sir Patrick, who is also chairman of the national Conservative party, said: “Labour have shown that they are not fit to form a government.”

The Argus’ politics reporter Ian Craig will be reporting live from the event at southwalesargus.co.uk and on Twitter at @ArgusICraig.

Although the event is two days long, media and the public are barred from attending events on the second day on Saturday, which is open to party members only.

This is the third Welsh spring conference of 2017, with the Liberal Democrats holding their event in Swansea last weekend and Plaid Cymru visiting Newport the week before.

Labour will close the season with their conference in Llandudno next weekend.
