THE family of a Gwent woman made sure she did not miss out on her 100th birthday celebration because she is in hospital by throwing a surprise party on the ward.

Mrs Beatrice Paget, who turned 100 yesterday, had a surprise when her family organised a buffet in Ebbw Vale hospital for her big day.

Mrs Paget, from Blaina who used to be a night sister at Blaina County hospital, broke her hip, so was forced to spend her birthday in a hospital bed.

Her daughter, Wendy Rosete, said she was a very independent woman and has never needed a carer to come to her house except for the occasional illness.

She wanted to make the most of her mother’s landmark day so decorated the day room in the hospital and arranged a party.

The centenarian, who was made a widow 40 years ago, received her telegraph from the queen and celebrated with members of her family.

Wendy wanted to thank everyone involved in the day including family, friends and hospital staff, saying: "A massive thank you to everyone who sent my mam messages, cards, gifts and well wishes on her 100th birthday and thank you so much for everyone who came to the hospital, Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, in Ebbw Vale. Mam was completely and utterly overwhelmed.

“I really appreciate all the hard work and thought that has gone in to today from everyone, it's been a day to remember."
