THE Newport Centre is hosting the sixth Regional Festival for Music for Youth - which will feature an orchestra preparing to go on tour to New York.

After 20 years at Cwmbran’s County Hall, the Newport venue has hosted the event on the past six occasions.

Over the years, thousands of groups and young musicians have participated in the festival, with many going on to perform at the National Festival in Birmingham in July, and the Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in November.

The Gwent Youth Wind Orchestra, who are set to travel to the USA next month for the New York International Music Festival, will be performing at the music event, alongside around 100 other groups.

More than 2,700 young musicians will take part across the two-day festival in total.

Following on from their performance in Newport, the Gwent Youth Wind Orchestra will take to the stage again on Sunday April 2, in St John the Baptist Church, Risa Road, in a fundraising concert for their American trip.

The final day of the festival will take place at the Newport Centre tomorrow, from 9am to 8pm - the same time as the festival today.

Tickets for this event are complimentary, but organisers have invited those attending to make a donation to aid the young musicians performing at the festival.
