THE Office for National Statistics (ONS) opened its new Data Science Campus in Newport yesterday.

The campus, which is part of a £17-million investment in statistics, has been established to use new data sources and technologies, and provide statistics for policy makers and businesses about the UK economy and society generally.

Speaking at the launch, the Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns, said the significance of the campus should not be underestimated.

“This data science campus that the UK government is opening here in Newport is a recognition of the excellence that already exists here,” he said.

“It is a major boost in the skills and creates a world’s centre of excellence here in Newport.

“No better research or analysis will be done anywhere else than here and so many communities, economies and companies will benefit directly from this.”

Plans for the campus were announced last spring as part of ONS aims to further the statistical information it provides.

The site will work on projects within five themes – evolving economy; urban and rural; society; sustainability, and the UK in a global context.

The ONS has also set up the first UK Data Analytics apprenticeship scheme as part of the move, and is planning more opportunities to train people in the discipline.

Gareth Jones, from the Rogerstone area of Newport, is one of the apprentices at the Office for National Statistics.

The 33-year-old said that, as part his apprenticeship, he will work on a range of different projects, including a number in the Data Science Campus.

He said: “I started in December and it is very good.

“I have done various different roles in my employment history and I like work-based learning.

“If this had been available when I finished my A-levels, I would have done it straight away.

“It was something I could not miss. Working here is very rewarding.”

Newport West assembly member Jayne Bryant was also present at the launch.

She said: “This is excellent news for Newport and for Wales.

“The Office for National Statistics has made clear its commitment to investing in Newport ever since its move to Wales in 2006.

“The new hub will open doors and create opportunities for people living in and around the city. “
