A COLLEGE student from Caerphilly has won a gold medal at a national skills competition designed to celebrate the most talented in vocations from engineering to beauty.

Rachel Watson, a 23-year-old student from Coleg Gwent, won first place at the hands and face beauty therapy final, one in a series of events held in colleges across the country.

The competition, backed by the Welsh Government, included students performing mini cleansing facials, applying day makeup and giving a model a manicure.

Successful contestants have the chance to compete across the UK and worldwide.

Miss Watson, of Abercarn, said: “Being part of a competition was really nerve-wracking and I was trying my hardest to make sure I kept within the time periods, as well as doing a thorough job.”

The competitions are praised for demonstrating the high skills on offer in Wales.
