A DRIVER has spoken of the “frightening” moment an object was thrown at her car from a bridge.

Sally Brinton was driving home with her husband, Calvin, through Rogerstone when an object - believed to be a brick or stone - was hurled at her Vauxhall Zafira on Bank Holiday Monday evening.

The object crashed into the windscreen, cracking the glass, and causing Mrs Brinton to pull over on the A467 bypass.

When Mrs Brinton, aged 44, looked towards the offenders, she could only see the top of three heads fleeing the scene.

“It was really lucky there was not more traffic at the time and that it was a quiet time,” said Mrs Brinton, from Risca.

“The people who did this need to realise that this could have been much more serious.

“If it had been a different time of day or it had gone straight through the window somebody could have been killed.”

Mrs Brinton, who is a volunteer at the All Creatures Great and Small charity shop in Risca, said she saw a group of around three running away, but could only see the tops of their heads.

She said the incident caused a crack in the windscreen which was the size of a melon and that she will have to pay out for the excess on her insurance.

The mum of two added that she did not see anybody before the incident and said that there was a “loud bang” when the object collided with the windscreen.

She was driving home to Risca from Newport after having gone for a meal with her husband when the “frightening” incident happened.

“I think it was a stone or a brick,” Mrs Brinton added.

“It could have been a lot worse.”

Gwent Police is urging anyone with information to come forward.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “At approximately 8:39pm on Monday, May 1, we received a report of criminal damage to vehicle on the A467.

“It was reported an object had been thrown from an overhead bridge causing damage the windscreen.

“Anyone with any information is asked to call 101 quoting log number 460 01/05/17.”
