BORIS Johnson was in Newport earlier on today for the campaign trail .

The foreign secretary visited the Newport indoor market, where he spoke to stall holders and residents.

Speaking to the South Wales Argus, he said: "We are campaigning very hard for Angela Jones-Evans because she is a fantastic candidate.

"She is a local candidate, she is somebody who grew up here and understands this community and its needs.

"She wants to be part of Theresa May's team to govern in the interests of everybody in this country, I really hope she gets in."

There were many questions we wanted to ask Mr Johnson. However, we were only allowed to ask him two questions.

When asked why the Conservatives felt the need to impose a candidate in Newport West, he refused to answer.

He said: "There are only four possible candidates in Newport.

"There is Angela Jones-Evans and Theresa May, or there is Paul Flynn and Jeremy Corbyn.

"I want to go for Angela Jones-Evans and Theresa May."

Before visiting the market, the foreign secretary visited Target Group - a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and operational transformation provider.

Mr Johnson said: “Target Group is a great example of global Britain and what can be achieved by bringing together like-minded and hardworking individuals.

"The company has grown exponentially over the years and it is great to see it now develop an international footprint following its acquisition by Tech Mahindra. I have no doubt it will continue going from strength to strength in the years ahead.”
