ELECTION: I am delighted to have been elected to serve as one of the three Newport City Councillors to represent Rogerstone. Thank you for your support and I will do my best to represent all residents in Rogerstone. Rogerstone Community Councillors were also elected on May 4 2017. There are fifteen Community Councillors, they are Anita Bailey, Stephen Bowen, Andrew Collingbourne, Val Dudley, Yvonne Forsey, Chris Evans, Lisa Hearn, Mark Hoidn, Kath Hopkins, Nick Ireland, Stewart Jones, Chris Lacey, Chris Larcombe, Sally Mlewa and June Toleman. At the first meeting on May 10, Sally Mlewa was elected chair of Rogerstone Community Council. Congratulations Sally.

MEETINGS: RCC meets on the first Wednesday of the month (except August). The first item on the agenda is ‘Questions from the public’. Any Rogerstone resident may submit a question to be answered at the beginning of the meeting. The question must be submitted at least one week in advance of the meeting. To contact RCC email rogerstonecc@gmail.com. For more information, go to rogerstonecommunitycouncil.com

BUS SHELTER REPAIR: I have been chasing up the repair of the bus shelter on St John’s Crescent and I am pleased to report that a new side panel was installed on May 16. I have also been following up the removal of the telephone kiosk on St John’s Crescent. I have been told that it will be removed in ‘sooner rather than later’ but that an exact date could not be given. The telephone has been removed due to lack of use, so the kiosk is redundant.

GET TOGETHER: The ‘Great Get Together’ is inspired by Jo Cox MP, who was killed on June 16 last year. Family and friends believe there is a groundswell of people who reject divisive politics and simply want to bring our communities together and celebrate all that unites us. The organisation is inviting people to get together with their neighbours to share food and celebrate all that we hold in common. June 18 is going to be busy day with at least two activities in Rogerstone. A ‘Get Together’ will be held at the Rogerstone Welfare Grounds with lots of activities like ‘Dad’s got talent’, and a Father and son/daughter penalty shoot out inspired by it also being Father’s Day.

CANAL CENTRE: The Fourteen Locks Canal Centre will be hosting ‘Rock the Locks’. There will be a number of live music acts throughout the day and the cafe will be putting on a barbecue. Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust (MBACT) were pleased to welcome Trevor Fishlock to film on the Fourteen lock flight on Thursday May 4. We look forward to seeing our new centre manager Kate Wickens and MBACT Trustee Richard Dommett MBE on the TV when the programme is aired. The canal shop is now featuring the work of local crafts people.  This month the work of Janice Herbert is on display, to admire and for sale. Janice is a talented local artist presenting landscapes and seascapes in acrylic. The wooden pictures of Derek Harris are for sale in the shop. Derek is a scroll saw artist who makes pictures of Noah’s Ark, animals, birds, people and many more in Birch plywood.  Also for sale in the shop is wood for log burners and fire pits. The Cefn Meeting Room is available to hire for business meetings and special rates for charity and community groups. The Canal Centre would like to recruit a volunteer with book keeping or accountancy knowledge. If you are able to help e-mail myself on y.forsey@ntlworld.com or the MBACT secretary on mbactsecretary@gmail.com
