A “JEALOUS” and “possessive” man who choked his then partner until she became unconscious in an extreme attack has been jailed for three years.

Jamie Webber pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm in relation to the “sustained attack” against Jenna Thomas in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday, May 29.

Prosecutor David Pugh said Ms Thomas had lost consciousness twice during the attack due to Webber, 27, choking her.

The court heard they were in an “on and off” relationship since 2015 and that Webber had lived with her for about two and a half months. Mr Pugh told the court Ms Thomas described Webber as a “jealous and possessive partner who had a temper”.

“She said he constantly accused her of being unfaithful,” he continued. “On May 28, she found him in a foul mood, he had been drinking cider.

“She decided she was not happy in the relationship and told him she wanted him to leave.”

Mr Pugh said in the early hours, at around 1.45am, Ms Thomas went outside to move the bins and Webber suddenly appeared, asking for his phone charger. He closely followed her and went upstairs with her.

Ms Thomas was getting some of his belongings from the wardrobe when he kicked the wardrobe with such force that he kicked the door out of the hinges, hitting her, Mr Pugh added.

He said: “He started going through her phone and found a message from her son’s father. Webber would not accept that.

“He approached her from behind, putting his arms around her neck. He asked her again who he was while he was squeezing so tightly she couldn’t not breathe and lost consciousness.”

Mr Pugh said that, when Ms Thomas regained consciousness, Webber kept asking her about the text message.

He continued to choke her until she lost consciousness for a second time, he told the court.

“After regaining consciousness, she managed to open the window and ask for help,” he said. “As he was closing the window, she managed to get out of the house.

“She fell into the pavement and she was screaming hysterically. He chased her and kicked her head and body, shouting to her to shut up.

“He tried to pick her up and bring her back to the house, but she continued to scream for help and struggle. Both fell to the ground and he tried to cover her mouth.

“It is not clear whether she lost consciousness a further time at this point.”

Mr Pugh said a neighbour heard the screaming from her property and went straight downstairs, shouting at him to stop.

“Fortunately, he did stop, allowing her to get out and run to the neighbour’s house,” he said. “During the attack, she said he told her ‘if I am going back to prison, it is for killing you’ and she was frightened for her life.”

Mr Pugh said that, as a result of the attack, Ms Thomas, 22, had “severe” bruising to her forehead, her teeth had loosened, she had a split lip and both her eyes were swollen and “completely red”.

“Webber was arrested in west Wales a few days later,” he said.

Mr Pugh told the court Webber, of Buttermere Way, St Julians, Newport, has previous convictions for violence, including against an ex-partner, to whom he fractured the jaw, and against his mother, whom he punched.

Gareth Williams, defending, said Webber accepts he has no one else to blame for his actions, but himself.

“He says he is very sorry for what he has done because he had feelings for her,” Mr Williams added.

Judge Thomas Crowther QC sentencing Webber at Cardiff Crown Court today, said: “You were jealous and possessive over her. One evening, you were drinking and in a foul mood after she told you to leave.

“At one stage during the attack, you told her that, if you were going back to prison, it would be for killing her. She was absolutely terrified.

“This was a sustained attack, causing extreme fright.”

The judge imposed a restraining order until further notice and sentenced Webber to three years in prison.
