THE pictures of a motorbike driven at some speed over Newport’s city centre footbridge, could have been taken on several occasions in recent weeks and months.

This is not an unusual occurrence and in fact is one which seems to be taking place more often.

Like the pushbike riders who are regularly seen tearing along Cardiff Road, one of the major routes into the city centre, often at night and sometimes on the wrong side of the road, this is a trend which needs to be nipped in the bud.

These idiots are not only putting themselves at risk, but also other pedestrians and other road users.

No doubt those crossing the footbridge on a motorbike think it is just a bit of harmless fun.

Quite clearly it is not.

We cannot expect the police to be at the bridge 24 hours a day to stop the bike riders but it may now be time to erect some sort of bollard at one or both ends of the bridge to make crossing the bridge at speed an impossibility.

This would be a shame and there would of course be implications for wheelchair users and for cyclists and for those with children in pushchairs.

But it should be looked at.
