A spokeswoman from Gwent Police said the search had finished and "nothing had been found".
A lifeboat from SARA Newport also attended the incident with members of their specialist swift water rescue team.

A police helicopter is involved in the search.

Chief inspector Martin Smith for Gwent Police said: "Whilst dealing with the search a further report came forward from a member of the public saying they believe they saw a body in the river near Tredegar Park.
"We are investigating and if anyone has any information please call 101."
A SEARCH is being carried out by South Wales Fire and Rescue after a dinghy was found on the River Ebbw.
The search took place after the fire service received reports of children using the dinghy on the River Ebbw, near Bassaleg.
A spokesman from South Wales Fire said that the search is "precautionary".
He said: "We had reports of children using the dinghy.
"We are carrying out the search just as a precaution."
Gwent Police, the fire service and coastguard terms were involved in the search which started at about 5pm.
