NEWPORT is one of the luckiest places in the UK for top National Lottery wins with 45 millionaires being made in the area.

The city ranks fifth for the most wins of more than £50,000 since the lottery first began, it has been revealed.

Odds appear to be in the favour of residents, with one in every 1,089 players having now won a major prize.

A new winner has been crowned once every six months, with a total of 367 top tier prizes banked by players in the NP postcode.

Andy Carter, senior winners’ advisor at The National Lottery said: “I have been back and forth to Newport more times than I count since I started paying out big winners. This is an extremely lucky place to live and if I was allowed to play The National Lottery, I’d buy my tickets here.”

Communities have also benefited from the National Lottery, with 8,500 grants awarded to projects in the region.

Beneficiaries include the Riverfront, which received £24,700 to support the Big Splash arts festival, and £155,800 funding was granted to the Llanhilleth Institute for its Resilient Heritage project.
