FANS of Newport County AFC have claimed the BBC is unfairly favouring other teams in Wales for live radio coverage.

Politicians throughout the city have said they have been contacted by fans concerned that BBC Radio Wales does not provide full match commentary for all Exiles games.

In comparison, every Cardiff, Swansea and non-league Wrexham league game are covered live either on radio or online.

Among those to write to the BBC calling for an overhaul is Newport West AM Jayne Bryant, who is a long-time fan of the club and current season ticket holder.

She said: "Every fan should be able to access County games, whether that’s at Rodney Parade, online or by listening in.

"I’m hopeful that there are more opportunities for Newport County AFC matches to be broadcast than are currently planned."

Her Newport East counterpart John Griffiths has also written to the BBC over the issue.

He said: "As a lifelong County fan myself I know it’s not always possible to make it to every game, and many fans who are less able to get out and about rely on the radio to keep them updated."

And Newport East MP Jessica Morden said: "I hope that Radio Wales is able to accommodate an arrangement that gives County improved coverage alongside the other three major Welsh club sides."

And Newport City Council leader Cllr Debbie Wilcox has written to director general Tony Hall, saying the BBC had been "disrespectful" towards the club and the city.

"Professional football is vital to the city and we want to ensure that as many people as possible have the opportunity to follow the team," she said.

"Full radio coverage is a vital part of this equation and it is clear that current coverage arrangements simply don't provide the opportunity for people in the city to follow the fortunes of the team in a way afforded to supporters of other teams in Wales."

A BBC Wales spokeswoman said: "BBC Radio Wales supports Welsh sport and as part of its sporting package will continue to provide commentary of key Newport County games on analogue/FM transmitters, including next Tuesday’s EFL Cup match."

She added the station also provides daily news bulletins would as well as new dedicated Welsh football podcast covering all teams.

The Argus provides full coverage of all Newport County games and other stories every day in the paper and at southwalesargus.co.uk
