RESIDENTS have raised concerns about regeneration plans for the Ringland area of Newport.

As the Argus previously reported, Newport City Homes recently announced a multi-million regeneration scheme for the area, with Ringland Centre and Cot Farm at the heart of the proposals.

A consultation is currently taking place regarding the Cot Farm site, with documents published last week saying the proposed development would include the construction of 59 residential properties.

Newport City Homes have said the plans are not finalised and that consultation is ongoing.

However, some residents have now spoken out against the plans.

Janette Lach, 78, of Cot Farm Walk, said: “We have had this green field for 50 years and now they are taking it from us. We don’t want housing there.

“I have been really happy living here, but this is going to change things. There is going to be a lot more noise and traffic.”

Debbie Laffan, of Cot Farm Close, said she has have lived in her house for 24 years and that she loves it.

Her main concern is parking, saying it is going to be a “nightmare” as “there is not enough parking as it is now”.

Liz Gray, 57, of Cot Farm Close, said that “everything worries her about these plans”.

“The majority of us here have bought our houses and this is going to devalue our houses considerably,” she said. “It is going to be an absolute nightmare, right from the start when they do the building work.

“Imagine all the lorries going back and forth and all the noise it is going to cause.”

Melanie Jones, 46, of Cot Farm Close, said the first they heard about these plans was in July.

“We have had no letters, no notifications,” she said.

“They are asking people in Hendre Farm Drive, but they are not asking us. We are absolutely disgusted.

“It is a lot of houses going in this small space.”

A spokesman for Newport City Homes said: “The plans are not finalised. Consultation is ongoing and we want to hear people’s views.

“We are listening to their comments and we are going to amend the plans to reflect the feedback we are getting."

He added: “We will undertake all relevant surveys as part of planning processes.”

The spokesman said they will continue to work with the Ringland steering group and local councillors before the plans are submitted.

“This project is a significant investment and has mass potential to regenerate this area of Newport,” he said.
