A GYM is seeking people of all fitness levels to take part in a nationwide competition.

DW Fitness First, located in the East Retail Park in Measglas, is seeking men and women to take part in this year’s FitBrit challenge.

The challenge, which runs until the end of September, involves performing nine exercises back-to-back in the fastest time possible.

These include a 800m run, 30 kettlebell swings, 20 barbell front squats a 400m row and a 1.5km bike ride. A member of staff at the gym will time people and add their time to a national leaderboard.

Eddy Bailey, fitness manager at DW Fitness First in Newport, is one of the staff members at the gym who took part in the challenge.

He described the experience as “humbling.”

He said: “It’s difficult but not impossible. We have people of all fitness levels doing it, and nobody has dropped out yet.

“Staff are on hand to time the challenge and they keep people motivated.

“I gave 100 per cent on the run and I struggled on the rest, so my advice would be to pace yourself. I wanted to quit when I did it, but one of the personal trainers was able to push me through it.”

The challenge has already begun and Georgia Hill is currently at the top of the leader board in Newport with a time of 12 minutes, although Mr Bailey says most people complete the exercises in about 20 minutes.

There are a number of categories in the challenger. The open category is open to everyone, giving where people compete against the fittest in the country to be crowned FitBrit champion.

The masters event is for people aged 40 or over on or before the final date for submitting a time, and there is also a team category, which is for two people and participants can alternate between exercises.

Mr Baily added: “We would encourage people of all fitness levels to take part, and friends to get together and have a go.”
