NEWPORT born Reverend John Davies was yesterday named the new Archbishop of Wales.
This week, Welsh bishops - including Bishop of Monmouth Richard Pain and Bishop of Llandaff June Osborne - gathered at Llandrindod Wells to elect a new Archbishop to replace Reverend Barry Morgan.
All six serving bishops in Wales were candidates for the role.
Archbishop John, who was educated at Bassaleg Grammar School, achieved the two-thirds of the vote to become the thirteenth Archbishop of Wales.
Previously he read law at Southampton University before becoming a solicitor.
Archbishop John later entered the priesthood after studying at St. Michael’s College, Llandaff in 1984.
Before election to Archbishop, he was previously Bishop of Swansea and Brecon.
The Church in Wales has said that the enthronement would take place in a few months
