AN ANNUAL scarecrow festival added a splash of colour to one Gwent village.

Llanfrechfa’s scarecrow competition had 18 entries. The village association was forced to abandon their festival fun day on Sunday when the decision was made to rearrange events due to rain.

Judging of the scarecrow competition did take place and judges were unanimous in their decision.

This year’s theme was cartoons and the winner was a scarecrow of Pepper Pig by the Ponthir Play Group. In second place came Top Cat which was made by The Burleys from Llanfrechfa. A Dennis The Menace scarecrow, made by the Sheppard Family, came third.

Association chairman Tony Pead said: “The standard this year was extraordinarily high, it is the highest standard we have ever had.

I want to thank everyone that took part in making it a success.”

The festival fun day will be held this Sunday at The Gate pub in Llanfrechfa. For more information visit facebook.com/LlanfrechffaVillageAssociation.
