THE doors to a new Newport primary school opened for the first time this week.

Rogerstone-based Jubilee Park Primary School opened on Wednesday and has been described as a “growing” school which means pupil numbers are expected to increase.

The school, which has been built on a former industrial site, currently has five classes but this is expected to expand to seven next year.

It’s capacity is also expected to increase to hold 373 pupils.

Head teacher Catherine Kucia said: “A new school year is always exciting, especially when children are at the start of their education, but to be the first pupils in a new school building is even more special.

“We are very privileged to be opening our new learning environment and will ensure it is a welcoming and caring school where children will be nurtured and inspired to reach their full potential.”

Rogerstone councillor Chris Evans said he wanted to “pay tribute” to developers of the site.

He said: ‘I’d like to pay tribute to workers for delivering our new school on time and also council education staff.

“I’d like to wish teachers, staff and of course carers and parents all the best, enjoy your new school.”

Councillor Gail Giles, who is Newport City Council’s cabinet member for education and skills, said that the council is committed to providing a “first class education”.

She said: “Jubilee Park Primary is a fantastic new school and this is a proud moment for everyone – staff, governors, pupils, parents, carers and, of course, the council.

“I would like to thank all those who made this day possible, including the developers, and I’m sure this will be a very happy and successful school.”
