RESIDENTS at an Ebbw Vale sheltered housing scheme took a trip down memory lane to the “good old days” at a World War II memorabilia day.

Fifteen tenants of Melin Homes’ Llwys Ebwy took part in the day, which borrowed cuttings from old newspapers, identity cards, food ration booklet, dried egg, a bell and a black out torch from a museum.

Robert Clubb, 93, showed his collection of medals, a framed letter of thanks for his service and a handwritten journal of memories since he began his career as a merchant seaman.

Des Morgan, who served for 22 years in the army as a Sargeant Major Morgan added: “We would wind each other up and trick each other into extra work.”

Brian Griffiths, 80, spoke of the “good old days” when reminiscing about his service in the Merchant Navy and Air Force also.

Scheme manager Liz Hughes said; “Days like this show how important it is for residents to come together with a common interest.

“We will definitely be organising more activities like this.

“The amazing stories that have been shared have been a truly humbling experience. “
