A MUM-of-three who was told by doctors she may never be able to walk again after an accident left her with a crushed pelvis has opened up her dream business.

Vicky Leonard, who lives in the St Julian’s area of Newport, feared she may never walk again after her horse reared and fell on her while she was out riding.

The 35-year-old was left with a broken pelvis - with the left side of it crushed - after the accident in January last year.

Mrs Leonard was in the Royal Gwent Hospital for several months and was then in a wheelchair before going on to crutches.

However, the mum - who has three daughters aged 16, nine and four - said she was determined to get back on her feet and get back to work.

She said: “I was a mobile dresser before the accident and obviously I couldn’t really work while I was bed bound or in a wheelchair or on crutches.

“When I was in the hospital I would look at this blank wall and imagine all of my goals that I wanted to achieve when I was well again.

“It would be stuff like getting back to work and looking at setting up my own business to smaller things like going back to the gym or going riding again.”

In July last year, Mrs Leonard could walk again without her crutches but struggled to work as a mobile hairdresser.

She said: “I kept working but instead people would come to my house. It was quite difficult for a while as I couldn’t stand for long periods of time.

“All the customers I’ve had for a long time were great though, and they sat in-between my legs on the floor while I sat on the sofa so they could have their hair cut.”

Due to her injuries from the accident last year, Mrs Leonard had to undergo a hysterectomy in February this year but said as soon as it was over she was straight back to work.

She also recently opened her own hair salon called Your Hair Your Choice in Maindee and said it has been her dream.

Mrs Leonard said: “It has been amazing. I’ve been open for around four weeks now and it has been going really well. “This was the next step for me as I’ve been mobile hair dressing for 10 years. I’m really proud of myself.”
