PHOTOGRAPHERS donned their cameras as they took to the streets of Newport for a 24 hour photo marathon.

Around 150 people from across Gwent came to the city to show off their snapping skills with their DSLR cameras, film cameras or smart phones.

The photo marathon is the first for Newport was organised and set up by Fez Miah, communications officer at Maindee Library.

He said: "It’s about having fun while exploring Newport and photography.

“We decided we would host our own marathon and get photographers to get involved.

“We wanted to give it a try.

“Our photo marathon is inclusive to all ages and abilities and encourage them to go out and use their skills and take pictures around Newport. Its 24 hours long.

“There will be a public exhibition held in a two weeks’ time which will show every photo that everyone has taken. And winners will be announced a few days later.”

In the 24 hours, competitors were given a list of 12 subjects such as Day and Night, Strike a Pose etc.

On top of the competition, there was a series of workshops throughout the day – including landscape photographer, flash photography, fashion photography and a Photoshop workshop amongst others.

“The idea was to encourage people to take up photography in their own way,” Mr Miah said.

“We wanted people to have fun and not be highly competitive. To explore, have fun, learn new things and just to enjoy really.”

Hari Mehrota, who ran a landscape workshop on Saturday, said: “We have so much on our doorstep. There is so much to be explored.

“This encourages people to get out in the local city, creatives can get together and enjoy new ideas and share ideas.”

The main funders of the photo marathon are The Camera Centre and Maindee Unlimited.

Others sponsors include Newport Transport, Coleg Gwent, Holbrook Studio, Newport Live, Minute Man Press and Hortons Coffee House. All Newport business' and organisations that have helped the event be a success.
