A DAD has said his seven-month-old son could have been killed after a rocket was “thrown” at the window the baby was sleeping in.

Anthony Owen, visits his partner to see his baby Lachlan-Jai Bastuba-Owen and his two step-children two to three days a week in Bettws at their flat.

However, when staying at the flat on Tuesday night, the 32-year-old claims a firework was thrown at the front window - where Lachlan-Jai was sleeping.

Mr Owen also claims he phoned the police but was told because it was Hallowe’en officers were “too busy.”

He said: “The kids were hanging around and making a bit of noise so I shooed them away. That was about 10.45pm.

“I do go out a bit and shoo them away. Sometimes I do get a bit of mouth but they do go. But for them to go and then throw a firework at the window is ridiculous.

“I rang the police but they didn’t do anything - a phone call would have appreciated.

“Lachlan-Jai used to sleep right underneath the window but his cot is now further away from it which is lucky really.

“If he was underneath the window and the glass shattered it would have been terrible. Luckily the rocket did not go off.

“My partner and I heard the bang and ran to the room. It had been lit but it didn’t go off.”

Mr Owen, originally from Cardiff, said he does realise the police have a duty and will be busy on nights like Hallowe’en - but said he felt there was not enough support for his family.

He said: “I do sympathise with the police, they are busy and they are the police at the end of day. But if the residents report things and nothing is done at the end of the day no one will bother reporting anything.”

Mr Owen said that anti-social behaviour is rife in the shopping centre and around the flats where his partner lives.

He said: “There is a lot of anti-social behaviour and drugs and things round here. All it takes is a kid to come along and find a needle and then what will happen?

“We just want our community to be safe.”

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: “At 10.22pm, (Tuesday 31st October) we received a report that youths were throwing fireworks near the shops in Bettws. At 10.26pm, officers spoke with those involved and moved them on from the area.”
