CHILDREN from two primary schools in Abercarn got involved in an unusual project to help a local Christmas light fund.

Year 6 school pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Gwyddon and pupils from Abercarn Primary School lined up a single row of 10p coins on different parts of town.

The idea was initially launched last year and aims to raise money for the Abercarn and West End Christmas Lights Fund for this year’s lights.

On Monday, November 27, Year 6 pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Gwyddon lined Abercarn High Street with the shiny coins and raised more than £230 for the fund.

Local residents and businesses also had the chance to join in and contribute as well.

And on Friday, pupils from Abercarn Primary School got together to line up their coins and raised more than £140.

The idea behind the project which came from New Life Christian Church and the Abercarn and West End Christmas Lights Fund.

Children were asked to bring in 10p pieces to use them for the events.

One of the organisers of the event, Lois Greenhalgh, who works for New Life Christian Church, said the aim was to bring together the town and host something a little different to raise funds for Christmas.

Ms Greenhalgh said: “We wanted to involve everyone in Abercarn, especially the children. but we don’t do many fundraisers and we waned to do something that wasn’t just a generic fundraiser.

“This event sort of gets the whole village involved. We had one school at one side of town and one at the other getting involved.

“Doing that sort of brings both sides of the village together and that way its a bit of community support.”

Last year the event raised more than £700 which funded the Christmas lights.
