MUSIC will fill the streets as the annual Record Store Day takes place on Saturday.

More than 200 independent record shops across the UK come together to celebrate all things vinyl with a range of free events taking place.

In Newport, record store Diverse Vinyl, located on Charles Street, will be once again celebrating with a free festival that is being organised in conjunction with the city’s Business Improvement District.

Newport Now, the business-led body which supports and promotes the city centre, has funded the free live music and spoken word festival across six venues on Saturday night.

The festival is being delivered by Diverse Vinyl, and is being staged at the Murenger, Tiny Rebel, Newport Market’s Gallery Space, Le Public Space, McCann’s Rock ‘n’ Ale Bar, and Slipping Jimmy’s.

Thirty bands, solo artists and spoken word performers will be taking part in the festival including the Yawpers, Ming City Rockers, Bryony Sier and Sarah McCreadie.

Newport Now chairman Alan Edwards said: “On Saturday Newport hosts a free night of popular live entertainment to celebrate national Record Store Day, so we hope the crowds will come out in force.

“Newport is fortunate to have our own independent record store in Diverse Vinyl in the very heart of the city, and we’re pleased to be working with them to deliver this event.”

Diverse Vinyl’s co-owner Matt Jarrett said: “Record Store Day is now a firm fixture in every music fan’s calendar.

“We’ll be opening at 9am on the day and have more than 250 brand new, limited edition releases in the shop.

“We’ve put all of our energy into creating a free event in Newport city centre that hopefully appeals to both our customers and music fans of all ages in South Wales.

“It all starts at 4.30pm after we’ve closed the shop. We have more than 30 acts in six venues which covers acoustic performances, poetry and storytelling, indie, punk, country, folk and rock.”
