THE first national marathon in Wales is expected to bring over £1 million into Newport's economy as nearly 30,000 people descend on the city for the event.

As well as the positive impact of Newport’s economy, organisers Run 4 Wales say the event will give the city and Monmouthshire a chance to shine, with runners from as far afield as Japan, Algeria and Toronto flocking to take part.

More than 10,000 runners will be taking part while 20,000 watch on, and Friars Walk shopping centre will be open for business throughout race-day.

Older landmarks, such as the transporter bridge and castle will also be showcased as the marathon makes its mark on Sunday, April 29.

Nearly £1m is expected to be raised or good causes and charities and race partners ABP have said they are focussed on giving back to the community by inspiring the next generation to take up running as part of a healthier lifestyle.

Run 4 Wales Chief Executive Matt Newman said: “The ABP Newport Wales Marathon will satisfy the nation’s appetite for a mass-participation marathon on 29 April. Entries have rocketed since the race launched in October, exceeding all expectations for our inaugural event.

“Runners from four continents will have the chance see what Newport and Monmouthshire have to offer the world.

“Cardiff has a reputation as a hub for world-class sporting events, but now it is time for Newport to establish itself as an ideal location for elite competition and spectator experience. It is predicted the event will pump around £1.1million into the local economy as nearly 10,000 participants and 20,000 supporters flock to the city.

“It is hoped the ABP Newport Wales Marathon will be televised from next year to put the regenerated city centre in the spotlight and cement the city’s position as a centre for sporting excellence.

“From launch day we have been delighted to have the involvement of our Title Partner ABP, who have been committed to supporting an event that will have such a positive impact on local communities and charities. Thanks must go to Welsh Government and Newport City Council for making the staging of the event possible. We hope the ABP Newport Wales Marathon & 10K can become a permanent fixture on the Welsh sporting calendar.”
