FOUR people have been taken to hospital after being hit by a car in Newport city centre.

The incident happened at about 5.30am and it has left part of Cambrian Road closed.

The vehicle - a blue Ford C-MAX - is believed to have hit three women and a man.

Gwent Police have confirmed that an 18-year-old man from the Newport area has been arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving.

Investigations are ongoing.

A spokeswoman from Welsh Ambulance confirmed that a vehicle had hit people.

She said :"We were called to the scene this morning and had four ambulances.

"Four people were taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital."

Owner of The Courtyard Iftekhar Haris witnessed the incident.

He said: "It was horrific. It’s something that you don’t want to see on any street."

Gwent Police said the car believed to be involved in the incident was found dumped and burnt out on Magor Street in Newport.  

Superintendent Glyn Fernquest  said: “This is a shocking incident for everyone involved. Specialist officers are currently investigating and are appealing for information.

"I’d like to just reassure the public that this incident is not believed to be terror related and has no links to the Newport marathon that is taking place this morning. Anyone who is taking part in the marathon should carry on with their arrangements as planned."

It is believed that two of the women have received potentially life changing injuries.
