COMMUTERS have again slammed severe traffic delays as a result of the ongoing M4 junction 28 road works, branding the current situation “unbearable”.

The project, which involves completely revamping the Bassaleg, Tredegar Park and Pont Ebbw Roundabouts started in February 2017 and is due to be completed by the end of this summer.

But a system of traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and lane closures is again driving rush hour commuters to despair.

The Argus also reported on drivers’ frustration at delays caused by the works earlier this year.

One motorist, who asked not to be named, said she is currently enduring an hour-and-a-half commute while travelling just 11-miles.

“I think everybody coming from Cardiff to Newport will be facing the same situation in the morning,” she added.

“From joining the slip road to get onto the junction 28 roundabout the traffic is just awful at the best of times, but since they’ve added traffic lights to the roundabout it has become unbearable.

“The problem is the lights only let a few cars through at a time. Until you get through you’re just sat, stuck bumper to bumper.

“People are just wasting massive parts of their working day sat in their cars.

“It’s a disgrace, and it should be sorted.”

Claire Gates lives in Coedkernew and said she uses junction 28 every day.

“I came down the M4 Westbound at 10.45am on Thursday and we were queuing on the M4 to come off the slip road,” she said.

“But at 8.30am on the same day I left Coedkernew and went straight through to the M4.”

“Some days it’s fantastic other days it’s an absolute nightmare.”

Allan Brinkley said he avoids the area because of the issue.

“Whilst we won’t know if the changes improve things until they’re finished, the upheaval in the meantime has drastically increased travel times for most users,” he said.

“The knock-on effect to neighbouring routes should be considered as well, for instance the amount of traffic using High Cross and accessing the M4 via J27 has increased dramatically.

“Add to the mix the alterations to the roundabout in Caerphilly and, of late, the rail replacement bus service pushing people into cars, and you’ve got a bit of a perfect storm.

“Residential developments along the valley have pushed up use of the A467, which hasn’t helped either.”

Tracy Mcmullin added: “I actually changed my working hours as my less than 10 minute drive into work would take an hour most days.”

Zoe Longdon suggested the problems get even worse when the traffic lights are turned off.

“It can take 30 minutes to get just from Imperial Park near Tredegar House to the large roundabout which then goes up Forge Lane,” she said.

Contractors Costain, who are responsible for the works, were contacted by the Argus to provide a progress update.
