A NEW head teacher has been appointed to a Newport secondary school.

Jackie Jarrett has been named as the new head teacher of St Joseph's R.C. High School.

Mrs Jarrett will take over from head teacher Trevor Brown, who is moving to Stanwell School in Penarth in the new academic year.

Chairman of governors Paul Bennett said: "On behalf of governors, I would like to express our thanks to Mr Brown for his commitment, energy and vision over the last eight years, five as our head teacher.

"He leaves St. Joseph’s RC High School having made an excellent contribution to the school’s development, ensuring that the school is in a secure position for all of our community. Under his leadership, St. Joseph’s has consistently achieved outstanding GCSE and A level results and has cemented its reputation at a local and national level, notably as a school that provides outstanding care, support and guidance for pupils, whatever their needs.

"I am delighted to inform you that following national advertisement and a rigorous interview process, governors were unanimous in appointing Mrs Jackie Jarrett as the new head teacher of St. Joseph’s RC High School. Mrs Jarrett has a strong track record of school improvement."

He added: "Everyone involved in the school wishes Mr. Brown and his family well in the future. He will leave with many fond memories of his time at the school and can be justly proud of his achievements. We look forward now to building on those achievements with Mrs Jarrett and continuing to strive to provide educational and spiritual experiences of the highest quality for all our pupils."

Mrs Jarrett previously served as deputy head teacher and will take over in September.
