A POLICE officer was injured while on duty in Newport in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The officer suffered a head injury while on Duty in Newport city centre.
One man was arrested and is in custody.
Gwent Police superintendent Ian Roberts shared photos of the incident and said: "An example of the 24/7 demands on our Newport policing team.
"Thanks to door staff at the Courtyard and A&E team at Royal Gwent Hospital for looking after my colleague who suffered a head injury."
A Gwent Police spokesman said: "At approximately 5am on Sunday, 20th May, 2018, officers were on duty in Cambrian Road, Newport, when the intervened in a disturbance involving two men.
"During the course of dealing with the incident, a police officer sustained a head injury due to a fall. His injury required hospital treatment, and he was subsequently discharged and is recovering well.
"A man from the Newport area was arrested and later charged with criminal damage following the disturbance."
The incident comes following a warning from superintendent Roberts after a spike in crime in Newport City Centre.
Gwent Police are investigating a series of eight street robberies which occurred in the Newport City Centre area between Wednesday May 16 and Friday, May 18.
