WALES as a nation should recognise and value older people’s contribution to the creation of vibrant, supportive communities, a Welsh Government minister will propose today.

Minister for older people Huw Irranca-Davies says many older people feel negative media images of ageing create conflict between generations.

He will tell the Welsh Senate of Older People - an umbrella body for organisations representing older people - he is committed to fighting ageist stereotypes and ensuring people of all ages can "work together to create the vibrant, supportive communities we all want”.

Mr Davies will tell a Senate meeting in Cardiff: “We know people in Wales are living longer, healthier lives. This is to be celebrated.

“To publicly demonstrate the Welsh Government’s commitment to older people, last week the First Minister announced that my job title has been changed to include older people. I am delighted that this allows me to more visibly act as a champion for older people’s rights.

“Changing my job title is not merely a tokenistic gesture. We will focus on the key issues older people tell us matter to them and I will ensure you are involved at every stage of this process.”
