AN ARTIST is selling his work at a bargain price.

The 100 Images exhibition is on display at Barnabas Arts House, a hidden gem in Pillgwenlly, with each piece of art on sale for just £100.

Each painting featured is by Welsh artist, Philip Muirden, who was Head of Foundation at Newport Art College during his 16 years working there, and is frequently selected by the Royal Academy of Arts for their summer shows.

Generally his artwork sells for a far greater price.

"The major galleries in London demand an artist has a brand image," explained Mr Muirden.

"Newport is a diverse town, and with projects like this I can have one idea in the morning, another in the afternoon, and use both.

"I can be myself without worrying. It's a compulsion I have, which I follow - with as much integrity as I can muster - to do the best work I can."

Each painting in the exhibit is A6, which is smaller than other artworks by Mr Muirden, including a painting - not for sale - also displayed at Barnabas Arts House.

Mr Muirden explained the decision: "I chose to do them all postcard size, because there were blocks of blank ones on sale, and they're much cheaper than a canvas.

"Sometimes people put prints on postcards and try selling them more than the original, which I think is immoral."

The time taken to paint each piece varied, with some taking a few hours, and others being scrapped multiple times before the final product.

The exhibition officially launched yesterday at 7pm, with wine, soothing music, and people gathering to enjoy artwork featured on two floors of the gallery.

Although there were only meant to be 100 paintings on display, an extra four are also on offer, with the exhibit running until September 1.

Mr Muirden will also host an exhibition, featuring larger pieces, in Barry in December.
