SOUTH Wales Argus readers have been having their say since the announcement that the much maligned roadworks at J28 M4 Tredegar Park and Pont Ebbw roundabouts are nearing completion.

Construction on the Welsh Government’s massive M4 J28 Improvement Scheme started in February 2017, and the project is said to be on target for completion in September this year.

From Wednesday, August 8, say contractors Costain, traffic will be able to flow through a new single direct lane from the M4 J28 eastbound off-slip and the A48 from Cleppa Park, to the A48 towards Newport.

Then, on August 23, Costain are planning to open up the central drive-through on the Pont Ebbw roundabout, meaning two-way traffic will be able to travel along the A48 between Tredegar Park roundabout and the Southern Distributor Road.

But some readers were left less than impressed.

'Roftybaby' commented on the website: "Woo more pretty Traffic Lights."

And other readers seemed worried that the new system could cause confusion.

'Scs702nd' said: "Lets hope drivers read the signs for the correct lanes. Every day I get cut up by drivers trying to skip the queues and trying to cut in on both roundabouts."

'Mario the plumber' agreed, and added: "Could do with gantry signs, not likely to happen with the penny pinching Welsh Government."

Others were more enthused though.

'National Geographic' wrote: "Great news. This was a major bottleneck in west Newport. Still need to sort out the tip access road."

'KeithoR7' said he was hopeful while pointing out some current issues, posting: "Hoping for the best and will reserve proper judgement for when it's all done.

"It has been ridiculous lately. Having just one lane for right turns creates a bottle neck while the left hand lane runs almost freely. Why not open up both forge road lanes for the right turns? People are using the left lane to turn right anyway and it's safe because there's four lanes to merge into once you get around the roundabout .

"Hopefully the new through lane from the east bound slip to the A48 along with "intelligent" traffic lights will help. But the traffic lights don't seem very smart at the moment. Every day, even outside of rush hour, the eastbound slip backs up onto the motorway while other inroads are clear.

"Still, current complaints aside I hope it works. We need it to work as it's becoming an unbearable area to live for anyone who needs to use the roads.
