RESIDENTS of a Gwent street are furious after 10 of their cars had paintstripper poured over them in a single night, costing thousands of pounds of damage.

Claire Edwards, 26, of South Avenue, Sebastopol, was one of the resident whose car was vandalised sometime in the early hours of Saturday.

She woke at around 8.30am, saw police outside in the street and soon realised her car was one of those targetted.

Ms Edwards said: "I am absolutely furious.

"They've got nothing from it at all. It's not even like they smashed the window to steal something."

She described how the paint on the cars had bubbled after something like paintstripper or brake fluid was poured over them.

She said: "It's even started to burn through the plastic of one of the headlights.

"The police have been here, but they didn't seem to think there was much they could do.

Other residents of the street were equally devastated.

Brian Mustoe, 67, whose five-year-old Ford Fiesta was vandalised said: "Everybody was out in the street together. "It's unbelieveable."

One household had four cars damaged including two that were bought in the past fortnight, Janet Marwood, of South Avenue said: "I'm rather upset, I don't think anyone was targeted, they just did every car.

"My son's had his car exactly a week, it's not very nice and his girlfriend was staying over, she had hers a fortnight."

The other cars damaged at Mrs Marwood's house were her own and her other son's.

"It is understood other victims include a recovering cancer patient.

Makes and models vandalised included a Smart car convertible, a Vauxhall 4x4, a 2006 Chevrolet and a Vauxhall Astra.

Inspector Robert Witherall of Gwent Police said: "This was senseless vandalism which has caused potentially thousands of pounds worth of damage and police are appealing for witnesses to this incident."
