TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD: Chairman Mrs Beattie welcomed everyone to the September meeting, the first after their summer break.

Good wishes were sent to members in hospital. Congratulations were extended to members celebrating birthdays in September, also to Ann Richards and her husband, Ivor, on becoming great-grandparents.

Treasurer Mrs Rae Williams was thanked for presenting the financial report.

Mrs Beattie gave details of future events to note in our diaries. An outing to Swansea on Wednesday, November 28, the Townswomen's carol service in Blaenavon on Saturday, December 1, and then to end the year a Christmas lunch with cabaret at Tintern on Wednesday, December 12.

We were pleased to welcome our speaker, Rev W J Rutter. He gave a very interesting talk on pub signs, which he illustrated with excellent slides and humorous stories. Many pub signs originated because people could not read, and give quite a social history. He was thanked by Mrs Pamela Winnington.

Everyone enjoyed tea and biscuits provided by Mrs Mary Clayton and Mrs Catherine Jones.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 17, in the Community Centre, Pillmawr Road, Malpas, at 7.30pm. Harvest Supper and sales table will follow the business meeting. New members are very welcome.
