WOMEN'S INSTITUTE: Our cream tea in August was held at Christchurch on a beautiful, sunny afternoon and was a huge success. The church hall was full and everyone enjoyed their scones and cakes after being very well entertained by Music For You.

We were well supported by five neighbouring WIs, also some members of the executive committee from Gwent Federal Office. Our president, Vera Jarvis, thanked the entertainers and all our members and friends for their support. The president of Caldicot WI thanked Christchurch for inviting the visitors. She said they all agreed it had been a lovely afternoon, and perhaps some of Christchurch WI would like to support them at a function they are putting on later in the year.

The September meeting was opened by our president, Vera Jarvis, who welcomed members from Cheltenham Central WI, also all members and other visitors. We were all sorry to learn that Marjorie Miller had been unwell and had spent some time in hospital, but were pleased to hear she is now back home.

There was very little business, so our president introduced our speaker, Mr Neville Waters and his wife Edith. Mr Waters spoke to us about his year in office as the High Sheriff of Gwent. He told us a bit about the history of the sheriff and also some of the visits he made during the year. He met many members of the Royal Family, and although it was a very busy time he and his wife had enjoyed the experience.

He brought along the ceremonial sword and lots of photographs for us to look at. The vote of thanks was given by Marion Marsh, who said what an interesting afternoon we had.

The president of Cheltenham, Marian, thanked Christchurch for inviting them again, saying they would be pleased to see us at their meeting in April.

Afternoon tea was served by Megan Cleverly and helpers. Then the raffle was drawn. All too soon it was time to transport our visitors back to the train.

Our next meeting will be held at Christchurch Church Hall on Monday, October 1, at 2.30pm, and the speaker will be Mr David Hando.
