A PUB which has stood derelict for more than four years could finally be converted into flats.

The King Hotel, in Somerton Road, Newport, has become a target for vandalism and is described locally as an eyesore.

A planning application to convert the building into flats was first put forward in 2005 but a decision has been repeatedly delayed.

Now Newport City Council said the proposal is due to go to the planning committee for a decision on February 20.

The application, submitted by Johnsey Developments of Newport, is for 32 flats with associated works.

The proposal includes eight two bedroom flats and 14, one bedroom flats.

A legal agreement as part of the development would include financial contributions towards affordable housing, education and leisure facilities in the area.

The spokesman said a decision on the proposal had been delayed because The King is in a high risk of flooding area.

The spokesman said: "The council has been given approval for a plan for the East Bank river defence project, but that included some criteria, which was that other developments in the area cant fo ahead until a certain stage.

"We have found a way forward with the environment agency so this will not create a flood risk but that has taken time."

A number of residents in neighbouring Downing Street have complained about the state of the building, that can be seen from the back gardens of one side of the streets properties.

Ellen Elliott said: "I like living here but the only thing I don't like is The King.

"It's been derelict for about 10 years now and there's hardly a window left in there."
