A NEW resident has moved into Gwent's famous medieval monastery.

Tintern Abbey has welcomed a new statue of Mary and Jesus on a specially carved plinth in the abbey church.

Philip Chatfield's work, called Mary and the Child, is a modern recreation of a damaged 13th century statue, fragments of which remain at the Abbey.

Custodian Hayley Thomas Hill said: "The statue is very significant as all Cistercian Abbeys are dedicated to Mary and the Child so this is a precious statue that has remained here."
