THE DISCOVERY of six suspected illegal immigrants in Blaenavon raises numerous issues, not least the question of why they were brought this far into Britain before being dropped off.

The German lorry the six people, believed to be Eastern Europeans, were hiding in must have already travelled hundreds of miles from a ferry port before reaching its destination of Blaenavon.

The incident shows that security breaches at our ports are still possible despite all the Government talk of cracking down on illegal immigration and people trafficking.

But the incident also illustrates the brutality surrounding this whole area.

It brings home the reality of illegal immigration which is often squalid and of course dangerous for people who are desperate.

The six people found hiding in the back of the lorry included two young children aged just six or seven.

It is apparent that they had been in the lorry for days hiding among the load of pallets.

That must have been a terrifying and unpleasant experience especially for the children who are now likely to be taken into the care of social services.

It is early days yet for the police investigation but there may well be more to this than meets the eye.
