Everything is bigger in Vegas. This was certainly the case as the Joe Calzaghe/Bernard Hopkins roadshow rolled into the Planet Hollywood Hotel.

An entire week of big fight events' are planned, but the initial introductions were much ado about nothing, lots of American hype when in truth all that actually happened was that the two fighters appeared in the same building - never actually coming into contact.

However, this is Vegas and with an American compere screaming down a microphone, the event was hyped as if King Kong and Jaws were about to arrive duelling on the back of a pair of fire breathing Dragons.

The eight hour time difference between here and sunny South Wales means that every one of these diaries will essentially be 24 hours out of date, but hopefully they will provide an insight into what us British scribes are seeing.

Calzaghe impressed everyone, without question, at the first public event.

I would say around 500 fans were in attendance and at least 495 of them were there to see our Joe, who looks lean and relaxed. He got a terrific ovation.

He thanked everyone for coming, did several radio and television interviews, spent a good 45 minutes with the British newspaper journalists and then spoke with the Welsh papers separately, which was a nice touch.

Indeed, Enzo Calzaghe seemed genuinely pleased to see the Argus all the way out in Las Vegas.

Calzaghe's entire entourage consisted of uncle Sergio, dad Enzo, sparring partner Nathan Cleverly and his two boys, Joe and Connor.

I can exclusively reveal that Joe Jnr DOES prefer Las Vegas to school in Newbridge, it was fantastic to see the boys lapping up all the attention heading towards their old man.

However, Nathan Cleverly didn't have such a great time.

He graciously chatted with all the Welsh journalists, but he did so for such a long time that the rest of the Calzaghe clan were moved on for publicity photos in another part of the huge hotel.

Nathan got increasingly fraught - unable to get anyone to answer their phone - and at one point a whip-round to get him a taxi back to Team Calzaghe's villa was discussed!

However, eventually a smiling Joe returned; Nathan hadn't been left behind, to his considerable relief.

Calzaghe might have hung around for two hours, but with Hopkins it was more like two minutes.

Bernie turned up with a huge entourage, dressed from head to toe in all white and was as confrontational as ever.

He seems to have developed a particular dislike for BBC Wales' Steffan Garrero, after a few barbed comments in Steff's direction he told his entourage it was time to roll' and they were ushered out of a side door.

It reaffirmed my belief Calzaghe, just like Ricky Hatton before him, will have a hugely partisan crowd even if he is fighting an American in America.

After 48 hours in Vegas I am yet to find a single native with a good thing to say about Hopkins.

l Vegas is a truly extraordinary place, for more general musings you can check my blog on our website.
