BAG snatchers and thieves are believed to be working Newport city centre premises, prompting a police warning to clubbers.

Police say there is a trend of thieves stealing valuables left behind by revellers when they go to order drinks at the bar or to dance in clubs.

Although this is an ongoing problem, officers say the warmer weather has led to a rise in thefts.

In recent weeks, officers arrested two women they believed were touring city centre pubs and clubs looking for items to steal.

Although some thefts have been reported in pubs, police warn that clubs are the easiest target for opportunistic thieves who can operate in relative darkness.

Most thefts take place late at night, and thieves often take a handbag, then remove the items they want, before discarding the bag itself.

Inspector Chris Watts, of Newport Central station, is advising people to follow simple advice to avoid having their belongings stolen.

"Don't make it easy for thieves," he said.

"If you go to the bar for a drink, or go up to the dance floor, make sure you take your belongings with you.

"If you leave mobile phones, handbags, purses, or even clothes unguarded on tables or seating then you run the risk of having them taken.

"People who go out on the town also need to make sure they keep their wits about them.

"Don't drink so much alcohol, stay in control, and you are much less likely to become a victim of crime, whether it is theft or worse."
