A SPEED survey is to be carried out in a busy Blackwood street plagued by traffic and speeding motorists.

Residents of Greenwood Road said the street is congested during rush hours and attracts so-called "boy racers" at night.

They said traffic has trebled since the opening of the Sirhowy Enterprise Way and the Chartist Bridge two years ago.

Last year, Caerphilly council carried out a survey on the road and found "signs of excessive speed".

The council temporarily deployed a "speed visor", a device that detects the speed of passing vehicles and flashes up a reminder if the driver is speeding, recording the information for future use.

But residents said the situation hasn't changed.

Sonia Morgan, in her eighties, has lived on the road for 58 years.

She said: "I have invited the council to come up here at night to see the traffic. A lot of the youngsters go speeding up and down with the music on and windows open and they overtake dangerously.

"During the day it gets so busy I'm waiting for up to ten minutes to cross.

"It's like Brands Hatch sometimes. There should be something to try to ease it."

The road leads to Blackwood comprehensive school, where head teacher Mike Pickard and staff are putting together a school travel plan.

Mr Pickard said there are issues of congestion and traffic dangers in the areas surrounding the school, including Greenwood Road.

In response to the concerns Caerphilly council is deploying the speed visor again.

When officers have the speed data it is understood they are considering introducing more permanent and sophisticated vehicle activated signs.

A Caerphilly council spokesman said: "The council is carrying out a speed survey at this location and once we have accurate measurements of traffic speeds, we can determine whether any further course of action is appropriate."
