THE FAMILY of a 21-year-old student who died in a car accident have paid tribute to him.

Benjamin David Simmonds, a history student from Cwmbran, died after a collision in Cwmbran on Sunday April 20.

A Fiat Bravo was involved in the collision in Thornhill Road, near the junction with Hafren Road, at about 12.45am.

Mr Simmonds was transferred to the University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff, but later died.

Floral tributes were left at the scene in memory of the popular and laid-back young man.

Now his family have also paid tribute to him.

Mr Simmonds was the fourth of six children - four boys and two girls -and went to Fairwater High School.

He had a young nephew and his family said he would be sadly missed, but remembered as a "caring, compassionate man with a keen sense of humour and a love of life".

As well as studying history at the University of Wales, Caerleon, he was also the drummer and chief lyricist in local band "The DRWGS".

His family said: "Everyone who knew him liked his laid-back style and calm approach to life."

They also said they had been overwhelmed by support and comfort offered to them since his death, and thanked hospital staff for their care of him.

They said: "The positive and uplifting words from Ben's friends have shown them that he was loved by many others and will leave a void impossible to fill."

He was, they said: "A unique and special man".
