THE family of a ten-year-old boy who died in a lorry accident led an emotional procession to his funeral today.

Jordan Lee Widdall-Hughes of Potter Street, Pill, died on Tuesday, April 15, after falling from the back of a lorry on Newport's Southern Distributor Road near Mill Parade.

It is thought he hit his head on another vehicle. He later died from severe head injuries at the city's Royal Gwent Hospital.

Family members walked alongside his hearse through the streets of Pill to a service at St Stephen's Church.

There were around 100 people in the congregation, ranging from young school friends of Jordan to elderly members of his family. Hymns The Old Rugged Cross and Amazing Grace were sung by mourners.

Reverend Edward Mathias-Jones spoke of a young man who enjoyed religious studies stories and history and was both serious and full of life and pranks.

He said: "When a young person dies, people tend to look at it in terms of what they missed out on in later life and what was ahead.

"But that is somewhat misguided as children can pack an awful lot in to a short time. A moment for a child is the same as a day for us and Jordan had a lot of good times in his short time on this earth."

The hearse and coffin were covered in floral tributes, including one in the shape of a football. "Jordan loved football and we can only imagine that he is playing football in heaven now with the angels and winding Jesus up," added Rev Mathias-Jones.

"Jordan was always enjoying new adventures. Unfortunately, it was one of his adventures which ultimately cost him his life."
