PEOPLE plagued by noise problems don't have to suffer in silence.

Last year, Newport's community safety wardens responded to more than 2,600 noise complaints.

Most were solved on the night simply by speaking to those responsible and bringing the issue to their attention.

The council also has the power, as a last resort, to seize stereos or similar equipment and destroy them.

In Noise Action Week, the council wants people to know it is there to help.

Community safety wardens, environmental health officers and licensing officers can give advice and take formal action where necessary.

Noise Action Week is a national campaign to think about the noise they make and how it may affect others.

Whether it is the constant barking of a neighbour's dog, loud karaoke from the pub or a burglar alarm ringing all night, those suffering from noise problems are not alone.

In 2007, half the population said that noise affected their quality of life and 70 per cent of people said they were bothered by noise in their neighbourhood.
